Last fall, MTV announced that it was reuniting with Lauren Conrad, star of the network’s Laguna Beach and The Hills, for another reality seriesfocused on the young star’s burgeoning fashion line. But EW has EXCLUSIVELY learned why the Conrad series has been passed on by the network. “We decided not to go ahead with the show,” says David Janollari, EVP, Head of Programming for MTV. “She did do a pilot. There were talks about whether we could somehow manage to put together a special based on that footage but that’s also a big question mark based on her interest in that and the finances. We love her! We would love her on our network!”
The proposed series was not a glossy reality soap like The Hills but much more documentary style. It was also noticeably absent from MTV’s Upfront this week. Says Janollari, “It was a great attempt but it just didn’t feel like a perfect fit for us now.” (The news of Conrad’s show not moving forward was first reported by blogger Rob Owen.)
UPDATE Lauren Conrad has sent EW a statement regarding MTV’s decision:
“We sold a show to MTV, filmed it and are really proud of the final result. MTV felt the subject matter was too high brow for their audience and offered me the opportunity to change the show by incorporating more of my personal life. We agreed going into the project that this show would be an aspirational one, focusing on my career and my goals and not my personal relationships. We delivered the show that we sold and are sorry MTV didn’t feel their viewers were savvy enough to appreciate it.”
Lauren Conrad announced plans to launch a contemporary clothing line with her friends late last summer, and now she’s hard at work on the collection. “It’s doing really well,” she told us last night at the CoverGirl party in Los Angeles. “It’s a lot of masculine and feminine put together. We did some really great woven kind of suitings. My favorite piece is a tiered chiffon maxi. It’s just so romantic and I love it.” She also said her new line reflects her growth as a designer. “I pay a lot more attention to fit,” Conrad told us. “It’s become more important, especially as I’ve learned about the process, like how off-the-rack clothing isn’t meant to fit every body, and how it’s so important to take your things to a tailor and have little things altered.” We can’t wait to see the whole collection when it debuts in the coming months!
The star of Laguna Beach and The Hills and now a fashion designer plans a reality show to track her efforts to become so successful that she no longer needs TV
The offices of the Paper Crown fashion line are jammed with an MTV film crew as producers walk around in headsets and speak in whispers. The second floor suite in Los Angeles’ Westwood neighborhood is decorated with a zebra skin rug, an ornate table with lion’s claw feet, and mannequins in half-finished gowns. Reclining on an overstuffed antique sofa is Lauren Conrad—reality TV doyenne, best-selling author, and fashion impresario—in a bright print shirt, high-waisted slacks, and high heels of her own design.
Conrad, who blasted to stardom in MTV’s reality series about precocious Orange County teens, Laguna Beach, and its spin-off, The Hills, is embarking on one of the more unusual stunts in the short history of unscripted television. To cement her reputation as a businesswoman, the 24-year old is trying to distance herself from her reality TV alter ego. The chosen vehicle for this transformation? Yes, a new reality show—her third in seven years. Conrad’s yet-unnamed series, which will make its debut early this year on MTV, will follow her quest to become so successful as a businesswoman that she has to eventually cancel her show. As her agent, Max Stubblefield, puts it: “Lauren’s new businesses will feed on the show—which will feed on the new businesses.” Conrad insists she would love “for the cameras to go away. This show is a vehicle to get there. I would love to become a big, natural brand.”
Despite being famous for little more than once having been a teenager, Conrad—known as “LC” by her legions of adoring adolescent fans—may already be the millennials’ answer to Martha Stewart. She’s the author of four best-selling books, including Sugar & Spice, which continues the chronicle of a fictional young woman dealing with the travails of reality stardom. She’s coming off a successful campaign as the exclusive spokesperson for Avon’s Mark cosmetics. Since 2006 she has had endorsement deals with toy company Hasbro, leather goods maker Linea Pelle, and AT&T. Her fashion line for Kohl’s, LC Lauren Conrad, has been a “consistent top performer in our women’s category,” says Donald A. Brennan, a senior executive vice-president for the retailer. Her slightly more upscale line, the Lauren Conrad Collection, was sold in more than 500 stores before she discontinued it last year to focus on Paper Crown. She’s even done her own “Got Milk?” ad.
Unlike many reality stars of her generation, Conrad’s public introduction involved neither a sex tape nor a friendship with Paris Hilton. In 2004 she was cast as the star of MTV’s alpha-kid show Laguna Beach and wooed fans with her estimable sanity. During five seasons of the show’s sequel, The Hills, which followed her as a student at Los Angeles’ Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising, Conrad maintained a nearly Churchillian composure in the face of juvenile male behavior and back-stabbing female frenemies. Her constant disappointments in love and her ability to eschew various Hollywood rites of passage—Asian symbol tattoos, collagen lip injections—made her a favored cover girl of women’s magazines and a good-girl role model. “She was always going through that relationship saga of trying to find the right guy,” says Adam DiVello, creator and executive producer of The Hills. “It was very Carrie Bradshaw.”
The lovely and very stylish Lauren Conrad hosted a show on Access Hollywood Live today featuring clothes from her LC Lauren Conrad for Kohl’s collection and tips from her new book “Lauren Conrad Style.”
The book is chock full of good info and practical advice that works for real women, including how to find the right pair of jeans and how to edit your closet. There is a section on how to create foolproof outfits for every occasion and how to make an outfit your own by adding personal touches.
For our fashion show, Lauren revealed her go-to pieces:
THE WHITE TEE
“The white tee is timeless,” Lauren says. “So many different ways to wear it. You can dress it up, dress it down.” Lauren prefers her tees to be lightweight and a bit slouchy.
THE BLACK MINI DRESS AND THE BLACK HEEL
“You can’t go wrong with the little black dress. So many options out there for every body type,” she says. Of course, the black dress always looks great paired with one of LC’s other go-to pieces… the black heel. Lauren loves black platform pumps and wears them to dress up jeans or look good on the red carpet.
THE SKINNY JEAN
“I love a skinny jean, especially in a dark wash. I hope it sticks around,” Lauren says of her go-to cut. I agree and hope this trend is around for a while too! Lauren says her “skinnies” as she calls them, are the most versatile item in her closet. Her favorite brands are J Brand, Urban Outfitters and Levi’s.
THE OVERSIZE SWEATER
“I love an oversize sweater because I travel all the time,” Lauren says. Hers are mostly lightweight because she lives in California and because she is so dressed up most of the time, in her off-moments she loves to be comfortable. Scoop necks, v-necks and cardigans all play a big part of her wardrobe.
Making for quite the pleasant sight to her many fans, Lauren Conrad got to work on her new reality show in Westwood, California on Thursday (November 4).
Joined by a gal pal, the former “Hills” star strutted along the city streets as the cameras rolled, then heading off for a lunch meeting at Bottega Louie Restaurant and Gourmet Market.
As for LC’s new gig, which is tentatively titled “Lauren Conrad: Fiercely Fashionable,” it will focus on her career in the fashion industry.
Previously talking about the effort with Ryan Seacrest, Miss Conrad said that the series “will be something very different” from The Hills, in that her personal life will not be a part of the show.
Though “The Hills” may be a distant memory, its star, Lauren Conrad, has managed to stay busy. Conrad recently launched a new high-end fashion line, in addition to her more affordable Kohl’s collection, LC Lauren Conrad.
“My new line, Paper Crown, will really cater more to the special occasion dress,” she says. “I love designing everyday clothes for Kohl’s, but sometimes it is fun to have that special dress or splurge every once in a while.”
In addition to her fashion collections, she also recently released a fashion guide, “Lauren Conrad Style.” The book offers practical advice on beauty, clothes and looking your best.
Before a recent visit to the Triangle, she shared a few of her top style tips:
Size matters: “Wear what fits,” she says. “Even the best outfit won’t look good if it isn’t the right size.”
Choose trends wisely: “Don’t follow trends blindly,” she says. “Not everything looks good on everyone.”
Shop your own closet: “It’s all in the styling,” she says of creating new looks with what you already own.
